USCG Polar Sea

The USCG Polar Sea (WAGB-II) is one of the most powerful non-nuclear powered icebreakers in the world. With three engines, it can generate 60,000 horsepower and able to cruise 3 kts through 6 ft of ice. It can break ice 21 ft thick by backing and ramming. It’s homeport is in Seattle. Designed for two helicopters, it currently sports one HH65 Dolphin, stored on board in hanger or on the helipad.

I had the pleasure of sailing on the Polar Sea for a brief time from Nome to Cold Bay, Alaska, to conduct seabird surveys. The crew was friendly and helpful. These photos are from that cruise during late November 2008.
